How to Build Your Personal Board of Directors: Fearless in 5

Updated: Nov 13, 2019

Do you have a personal Board of Directors that’s helping you accelerate your career? If not, you should. And in this week’s Fearless in 5, we’ll tell you how to build one.

Step #1: Find some mentors. These are not just people that you think of who are smart or successful, but those folks who have the strengths and the skills that you need to develop to take your career to the next level.

Step #2: Find some peer mentors. I like to call these folks thought partners as well. They’re your colleagues. Folks at your level who either have a similar job or different who will be your truth tellers who will help you solve some of those tough questions that will keep you up at night.

Step #3: Start mentoring others. Even if you have only been working for one or two years you have something to offer someone else. You can actually learn some skills at the same time, whether it’s around the latest technology, social media, gaming…and you’ll also build your own confidence because when they express their gratitude for all of your great ideas, you’re going to feel pretty good about yourself.

Step #4: Find a sponsor. This is a senior executive within your organization who you build a relationship with who can sing your praises even when you’re not around.

Step #5: Find balance. Balance means a combination of men and women. Balance also means folks inside and outside your organization which will provide you with different perspectives.
