Did you know that for a recent sales manager role in a Fortune 500 company, 73 people applied? 72 of them were men. And the one woman who applied for the role didn’t even work at the company. This is all despite their leadership believing that there were capable, competent female employees within the organization who should have thrown their hat in the ring. That’s why in this Fearless in 5 we’ll focus on why you need to go for the promotion.
1. You don’t need to check every box. Find out what’s required for the role and what’s on their wish list. If you meet most but not all of the criteria, go for it. Generally, if you can check every box, it’s not a promotion but a lateral move.
2. Stop believing a promotion means more work. If you think you already have too much on your plate and can’t take on more, you might be wrong. That promotion might not mean any more time or travel, but rather, you get to spend more time doing what you’re great at.
3. Talk to your manager now. You want to start having conversations long before you’re ready. They can help you take steps to prepare and identify options. And if they won’t, they’re not the kind of manager you want to work for.
4. Invite the hiring manager for a cup of coffee—whether it’s in real life or virtually. Ask them what skills and attributes they are looking for, build that connection, and express your interest.
5. Ask GenAI what you could do next. If you’re unsure, upload your resume, recent experiences, what fuels you and what you think you might like to do, and you might be surprised by just how helpful of a career coach it can be. You can use Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or whatever GenAI application you prefer, and ask it to suggest possible career paths for you. Then ask for help with establishing a plan of action!
